Artificial Gravity for Spacecraft

Abstract

Researchers generated artificial gravity using rapidly oscillating electromagnetic fields, an effect discovered by accident while working on magnetic levitation for materials testing. Superconducting magnets shape field gradients that pull objects downward with a force equivalent to Earth’s gravity, in a compact space and without the massive rotating structures, Coriolis effects, or motion sickness of centrifugal designs. Early human trials reported normal balance, bone density, and muscle function inside the field, pointing toward long-duration missions free of the bone loss and muscle atrophy of weightlessness.
